I purchased these looking for a boot for whitewater canoeing/kayaking/rafting. Astral doesn't make for shoes average to wide feet. Merrells just don't have the needed grip in wet mossy conditions. I stumbled on Altama's on a review for another shoe. The price was reasonable, so I pulled the trigger. While I still think the Altamas run narrow, and they need to offer a wider option, I was able to loosen the lower part of the lace, throw in an overhand knot in the middle and tighten them at the top for a good fit. I think they are somewhat wide in the toe box, but the mid is still fairly narrow. I tested them rafting the Middle Ocoee and kayaking the Hiwassee. They definitely have a better grip than anything I have had in the past, they drain well, and they are very comfortable. They also have some that is thin enough to avoid problems fitting in the cockpit. I think I would be able to walk out if I had to bail on a trip for safety reasons. I wouldn't want to walk a long distance carrying a full pack or heavy boat, but think they would be better than most river shoe options. The boots are easy to clean-up I remove the insole and rinse them thoroughly under running water. Overall I'm very pleased, and like them enough I plan to buy a set of the low tops for daily wear, and I need to buy a pair a size or two up to fit with my drysuit booties. They actually look good. I definitely recommend paddlers take a look at these as a good option.
